How to Deal with Surface Defects of Epoxy Floor

Epoxy floor is highly recognized as an durable but good-looking floor and widely applied into cleanroom, workshops, playgrounds, warehouse or garage, etc., owing to its affordable price and good features like dustproof, seamless, low maintenance fee.
 
However when some surface defects pop up, these could be a big headache for the owners to repair. So it is a must for us to learn about the why and how for each kind of defects, and take prompt actions once they are found, so as to minimize the maintenance cost.
 
Surface Defects
 
1. Floor Bumps: with 2~5mm to 30~50mm in diameter on the surface coating.
Why: when the base course fails to be fully dry, all air will penetrate into the floor coatings and causes air moisture, generates the bumps on the surface. Otherwise, it is because of the unclear subflooring or underlayment beneath before the installing.
How: to repair the target floor bumps within small scale, when coating, pay much attention to the aridity and subflooring cleanup.
 
 
2. Floor Spalls: spalls between base course and surface coating/ coating interface
Why: it could appear in many conditions like the inappropriate primer coat,  extreme thick primer coat, long-time recoating for interlayers, heavy loads, works on the oil surface, soft cement layer, mounting water pressure when installing, condensation, etc.
How: sand the floor surface and re-coat with target paint; to strengthen the impact and abrasion resistance, select appropriate epoxy system and technique construction; for oil surface, clean thoroughly; water precaution shall be prepared against high underwater pressure, then to installing primer coat next day; for condensation problem, it is supposed to test the condensation spot firstly.
 
 
3.Floor Cracks: a state in which the film appears shrinkage cracks
Why: when pigment-to-binder ratio of coating materials exits great deviation, the ground base surface is much likely to pop up cracks. For film with better adhesion, it is more prone to remove along the crack track
How: to remove all the cracked coatings and clean up for reconstruction.
 
 
4.Floor Exposed : which means the base coat showing
Why: it results from the thinness of coating coverage, or non-uniform coverage of films, weak hiding power, excessive paint thinner, or extreme low solid content, etc.
How: to evenly coat the film with good throwing power materials; considerately reduce the utilization of thinners.
 
 
5. Uneven Floor Surface
Why: it could be caused by impurities mixture, uneven pavement; or hard lumps caused when coating for excessive adhesion; or it is because the material interruption when constructing.
How: firstly, construction environment shall be cleaned up, and quartz sand in similar size; ground surface needs to be smooth and clean; for construction materials, processes must be jointed with minimum time error; when the coatings are caking, new materials shall be made, etc.
 
 
6.Epoxy Lifting: the undercoat or primer surfacer expose on the surface
Why: the undercoat has not dried completely while the primer surfacer is in thick solvent
How: it needs to remake the undercoat and primer surfacer that are advised to use the same branded coatings, but the thinner from another manufacturers. And waterborne coatings featured with high polymer content is of great help for undercoat.
